About Steele Creek
Where it is: Southwest Mecklenburg County, generally within the old Steele Creek Township, reaching west to Lake Wylie. About two-thirds is inside Charlotte city limits.
History: Scots-Irish settlers arrived in the 1700s, and the first school opened in the 1780s. Charlotte began annexing township land after 1959, and the NC-49 widening, the new Buster Boyd Bridge and I-485 drove fast growth in the 2000s.
Main commercial areas: Rivergate Shopping Center, Ayrsley, Olde Whitehall (along I-485), Arrowood Road corridor, Charlotte Premium Outlets.
Parks and greenways: McDowell Nature Preserve on Lake Wylie (1,140+ acres, with Copperhead Island); Walker Branch/Hoover Creek Greenway (Rivergate Pkwy access).
