About Derita
Where it is: North Charlotte, bordered by I-77 to the west, I-85 to the east and W.T. Harris Blvd. to the north.
History: Founded in 1860 on family farmland. The post office opened in 1882 and was named for Derita Lewis, a friend of postmaster Amos L. Rumple. The farms gave way to homes in the 1950s and 1960s.
Main commercial areas: Business district along W. Sugar Creek Road.
Parks and greenways: Nevin Park (155 acres, 6000 Statesville Rd.); RibbonWalk Nature Preserve (about 190 acres); Thereasea C. Elders Park (Rockwell Church Rd.).
