About Elizabeth
Where it is: Just east of Uptown along E. 7th St and Elizabeth Ave. Roughly bounded by Randolph Rd / 4th St, Independence Blvd and a creek to the east.
History: Founded in 1891 as Charlotte’s second-oldest streetcar suburb, along the East Trade St streetcar line. It is named for Elizabeth College (1897) and was annexed into the city in 1907.
Main commercial areas: E. 7th St (older houses converted to shops and restaurants), Elizabeth Ave, and Randolph Rd (medical offices). Also home to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center and a CPCC campus.
Parks and greenways: Independence Park (described as the city’s first public park) at the western end, next to American Legion Memorial Stadium.
